Striped Kingfisher in the Serengeti
The striped kingfisher is the smallest kingfisher in East Africa — compact, blue-backed, and boldly striped below. It hunts fish, tadpoles, and aquatic insects from low perches over still water and muddy pools.
In Serengeti, striped kingfishers favour quiet backwaters, oxbow pools, and the muddy margins of seasonal pans rather than fast main river channels. Their tiny size makes them easy to overlook until a flash of blue catches the eye.

How to identify a striped kingfisher
Very small kingfisher with bright blue upperparts, white throat, and boldly dark-striped underparts. Bill is black; legs orange. In flight, rapid whirring wingbeats low over water. Voice is a high-pitched squeak — often heard from riverside reeds before the bird is seen.
Much smaller than grey-headed kingfisher — if in doubt, compare size against a nearby sparrow or weaver. The striped kingfisher’s underparts show heavy dark barring on white; the grey-headed has a plain chestnut belly and grey head. Do not confuse with malachite kingfisher in other regions (different head pattern and brighter green).
When perched, the bird often holds its tail cocked and sits motionless for long periods — patience at a muddy pool edge is rewarded when it suddenly dives for a tadpole.

Scan muddy pan edges and backwaters — not fast river channels.

Fishing from low perches
Striped kingfishers plunge vertically from perches within a metre of the surface — a different technique from the grey-headed kingfisher’s longer drops onto land prey. They need still or slow water where small fish and tadpoles concentrate.
Nesting burrows are excavated in sandy banks — look for holes near river bends. Pairs are territorial around favoured pools and may chase larger kingfishers from their patch.
