About lions in the Serengeti
Lions define the Serengeti safari experience. Males hold large territories while females cooperate to hunt zebra, wildebeest, and buffalo. Sightings are common, but quality depends on season, camp location, and guide skill.
During the Great Migration, prides follow herds across the ecosystem. For month-by-month movement, see our Serengeti migration guide. Browse all species on the Serengeti Animals & Birds gallery.
Where to see lions
Central Seronera offers reliable year-round lion viewing along rivers and kopjes. Northern Serengeti shines when migration herds gather near the Mara from July to October. Southern plains can be excellent during calving season when predators target young wildebeest.
Pair Serengeti with the wider Northern Circuit or book our 7-day Tanzania safari for two full days in the park.
