Why ostriches matter on safari
Unlike shy forest species, ostriches feed in the open. Guides spot them between mammal sightings, making them a reliable highlight for photographers and families. Males boom and display in breeding season; females are grey-brown and slightly smaller.

How to identify a common ostrich
Males are mostly black with white wing and tail plumes; females and juveniles are grey-brown. Look for the long bare neck, massive thighs, and two-toed track in soft soil. In flightless display, wings spread like a sail. Do not confuse with secretary birds, which are much slimmer and walk with a crested head.
Where to see ostriches in Serengeti
Ostriches favor short-grass plains, open woodland edges, and dry valleys. In Serengeti National Park they are widespread from Seronera to the southern plains and Ndutu. Small groups graze on grasses, seeds, and succulents, often near zebra and wildebeest.
