Overview

Lake Natron is one of Tanzania's most dramatic off-the-beaten-track destinations on the Northern Circuit. This hyper-alkaline soda lake beneath the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai — the Maasai "Mountain of God" — is one of East Africa's most important breeding grounds for more than 2.5 million lesser flamingos.

The Rift Valley escarpment drive to Lake Natron passes through Maasai country with sweeping views and remote landscapes unlike the classic safari parks. Guided walks to the lake shore reveal pink flamingo colonies, waterfalls near Ngare Sero, and stark volcanic scenery. Pair Natron with Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Lake Eyasi on our 10-day Great Migration & acidic lakes safari.

Best visited Jun–Oct for dry-season access; flamingo numbers peak during breeding season. Tell us your travel dates and fitness level for walks — we will recommend camp options and a day-by-day plan. Contact our Arusha team or request a travel proposal.
