Marangu Route, Kilimanjaro

Kibo Hut

The last overnight stop before a midnight walk toward Uhuru Peak. Stone dormitories at about 4,700 metres. Assigned by Kilimanjaro National Park on the climb, not a hotel you book on your own.

Kibo Hut is the last overnight stop on Kilimanjaro’s Marangu Route, the hut path that ends with a midnight walk toward Uhuru Peak. Climbers rest here in stone dormitories at about 4,700 metres, then leave in the dark for Gilman’s Point and the crater rim. This page is for travellers comparing routes with Zamadam Adventure in Arusha, not a campsite booking form. Park huts are assigned by Kilimanjaro National Park on the climb.

Marangu

Hut route: Mandara, Horombo, then Kibo

Where it sits

The hut stands on the eastern side of the Kibo cone, on the high saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi. Vegetation is gone. The ground is volcanic rock and dust. Nights are cold and the air is thin. From here the summit is still more than 1,000 metres higher, done in one long push rather than another full walking day.

Who sleeps here

Marangu is the route built around huts instead of tents: Mandara, Horombo, then Kibo. If you want a tented climb with different scenery, look at Machame or Lemosho on our Kilimanjaro trips page. We plan both styles from Arusha. The hut is not a hotel. Sleeping is dormitory-style, meals are simple, and most people only stay long enough to eat, rest, and start summit night.

Summit night from Kibo Hut

Teams usually leave around midnight. Headtorches, slow switchbacks on scree, and very little talking. The aim is to reach the crater rim near sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak if conditions and health allow. Coming back down to Kibo the same morning is hard on the knees. A good Marangu itinerary still uses extra time lower on the mountain so you arrive at Kibo already acclimatised, not rushing the last hut.
